Rationial

I chose Kimble Bent because as a foreigner, the conflicting cultures is really interesting to me. My artist model is Watchmen, both the original one and the new ones, because I want to show some old school quality while keeping a modern touch on the work. The pose of Kimble Bent that Caroline suggested was perfect for showing the inner conflicts and culture difference, also suits the dramatic effect I was trying to achieved.

The book cover from "Before Watchmen: Comedian Vol 15" is my artist model for colouring. The color scheme gave the "war happening" atmosphere to the drawing. Then I apply it onto my drawing

Ink line

This is the other concept where Kimble Bent is at the front, wearing piupiu and taking off his British army uniform. the mid ground has the British army fighting with Maoris. With the distance they are at, I get to not do the Maoris tattoos which avoid the problem with the way I represent them. The background has the pa and the village showing the location and that Maoris are fighting for their land.

Concepts

The original idea was to have Kimble Bent stand in the middle of  many Maori warriors. The colour contrast and the difference of facial figures could really make him stand out and show that he was out of place. And the Maori warrior on the top right was staring at him to show from his experience that he nearly got killed many times by other Maoris in the tribe he was living with because of his ethnicity. From the feedback, Caroline told me that I had to be carful with the representation of Maoris, especially the tattoos on them, Caroline suggested me to develop on my other concept.
